Transportation

Washington County Head Start / Early Head Start transportation staff includes 8 drivers, 12 CDL licensed Cooks and Classroom Aides, Transportation Manager/Substitute Driver, the Transportation Coordinator, and nearly 40 volunteer Bus Monitors made up of parents and community members. Together, this transportation team coordinates and provides transportation throughout the county, covering some 870 square miles.

Buses transport roughly 250 children to Center-Based programming. Of those 250 children, approximately 10% are Early Head Start enrollments.  Over the course of the program year, our buses cover over 70,000 miles.

In addition to busing, 12 vehicles provide transportation for Home-Based serving 142 children in their homes.

Safety:

Head Start surpassed the National Head Start Child Safety Restraint Regulations initial deadline of January 20, 2004 to equip all buses with integrated child safety seats. In addition the Head Start Performance Standards require that a monitor is present on each of the buses as they travel their assigned routes. Bus safety information is given to all parents/guardians at the beginning of the school year.

Anunually, our program is recognized with the safety excellence award, in recognition of excellent operating performance.
